The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) has awarded Hashem B. El-Serag, M.D., M.P.H., the Julius Friedenwald Medal.

Dr. El-Serag, who has served as Director of the DDC since 2014, has been a dedicated AGA leader since joining in 1996 and was recently recognized with the William Beaumont Prize in Gastroenterology for his seminal clinical research contributions. Most notably, he served as AGA’s 114th president from 2019-2020, playing a vital role in guiding the organization’s response during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also served as editor-in-chief of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology from 2012-2017, where he helped expand the journal’s

The AGA has deployed a critical survey to ascertain the current needs of GI investigators as a means to develop new organizational strategies that will effectively address those needs going forward. These strategies will involve, but are not limited to, resources, advocacy, mentorship, and training.
